A kitchen is the hardest room to lose, because it is the one you use several times a day. For most of our kitchen projects the family stays in the house, and the difference between that being tolerable or miserable comes down to preparation rather than luck.
We set up a temporary kitchen corner before demolition starts — usually the fridge, a kettle, a microwave and a work surface in the nearest room. We seal the work area with zip walls and run dust extraction at the tool rather than sweeping up afterwards.
The sequence matters too. We plan the plumbing so a working sink is available for as much of the project as possible, and we clean the containment area at the end of every day so the rest of the house stays usable.
